For those who are relatively new to our site, here’s a brief history: In July, 2006, ColoradoConfidential launched as the premier project of the Washington-based Center for Independent Media. Our goal as an all-online news organization was — and is — to provide lively, intelligent, investigative and enterprise reporting and opinion about events that are shaping Colorado and impacting the lives of all of us who call this state home.
In an era when traditional print-based news dailies are faltering, and suffering mass staff reductions, we believe there has never been a more critical time to help shape the evolution of journalism.
You can read more on the Center for Independent Media by clicking on the "about" section at the bottom of the page. But, in a nutshell, we strive to combine the best of blogging with the standards of ethical journalism. We hope that you make us, if you haven’t already, part of your essential news diet.
Many of you know me from my days as the editor of another Independent, the Colorado Springs Independent. While the CSIndy — as the altweekly is affectionately known — continues to provide an important voice in a city that really needs it, The Colorado Independent is not affiliated with that newspaper. Nor do we have ties to any other Colorado-based newspapers that also carry the spirit of independence in their names, including the Littleton Independent and the Glenwood Springs Post-Independent.
Yes, we are progressive-minded. That means our agenda is to promote accountability, good government and debate. As a nonprofit we are barred by law from engaging in partisan political activities – even if we wanted to. We strive to report news fairly and with a healthy respect for diversity of opinion. Since our launch, we’ve broken many important (and plain fun) stories. We are honored recipients of a number of journalism accolades from our peers. But, as always, our commitment, and our reason for existing is you, our readers.
Whether this is your first time here, or are a returning visitor, we welcome your feedback, ideas and suggestions. Whether you have a critique, praise, or another angle that we’ve missed, we love your comments. All we ask is for you to keep the discourse civil.
And, if you’ve got a news tip, an idea or are interested in submitting a guest opinion piece, drop me a line.
