A victim of the ongoing federal budget battle, U.S. Interior Secretary Ken Salazar is backing off of last December’s Wild Lands Order, which would have compelled the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to make millions of acres of federal land eligible for wilderness protection.

Just two days after the U.S. Senate rejected a bill that would have ended billions in tax breaks and subsidies for the nation’s top oil and gas companies, Sen. John Barrasso, R-Wyo., today introduced a bill aimed at “removing barriers to American onshore oil and natural gas production.”

House Republicans today began a week of what will no doubt be heated hearings aimed at blocking Interior Secretary Ken Salazar’s Wild Lands order that directed the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to protect millions of acres of federal land for its wilderness value.
