Udall: ‘Now is the time’ for Congress to pass Matthew Shepard...
Invoking the brutal murders of Matthew Shepard and Angie Zapata, U.S. Sen. Mark Udall called on Congress "to finally pass" federal hate crimes legislation in an opinion column published Sunday in the Boulder Daily Camera.
Days before the trial of Zapata's accused killer was set to begin in Greeley, the Boulder County Democrat lamented that "vile prejudice based on sexual orientation still plagues our society" a decade after Shepard, a 21-year-old University of Wyoming student, was beaten, tied to a fence and left to die in the cold.
Coalition unfurls ‘End Hate’ campaign ahead of Angie Zapata murder trial
A group of 50 progressive, civil rights and anti-violence groups launched a massive Internet and print media public information campaign Wednesday across Colorado to inform readers about transgender murder victim Angie Zapata, whose accused killer goes on trial in Greeley next week.
Judge tosses confession, gang links in Greeley transgender murder trial
A judge ruled this week that jurors won't hear part of the confession of a man accused of killing an 18-year-old Greeley transgender woman. The judge also ruled that prosecutors won't be able to tell jurors that Allen Andrade has gang ties that could have been a motive in the brutal slaying last summer of Angie Zapata.
Judge plans to rule on confession in killing of transgender woman
A Greeley judge is set to rule this week on whether portions of a confession will be admitted in the trial of a man accused of bludgeoning to death an 18-year-old Fort Lupton woman, The Greeley Tribune reports. Allen Andrade stands accused of beating Angie Zapata to death with a fire extinguisher and his fists last summer, after he learned the transgendered teenager was biologically a man.
Accused killer of transgendered woman faces additional charges
A man accused of bludgeoning to death an 18-year-old transgendered Fort Lupton woman will face additional criminal charges that could increase his sentence even if he's not convicted of the most serious murder charges, the Greeley Tribune reported Wednesday. The Weld County district attorney filed habitual criminal charges this week against Allen Andrade, 32, who stands accused of killing Angie Zapata in July. Police say Andrade beat Zapata to death with his fists and a fire extinguisher after he learned the transgendered teenager was biologically a man.
