Minimum-wage workers in Colorado will get an automatic 26-cent raise on Thursday, from $7.02 to $7.28. And, as the Colorado Springs Gazette points out, the manager of the 5-star Broadmoor hotel, which spent $100,000 opposing the voter-approved increase in 2006, is still grousing about the mandate. But, looked at another way, the increase represents about $520 per year for minimum wage employees –- considerably less than the $680-a-night price tag for a single night’s stay in a suite at the swanky Colorado Springs resort.

In a story this week about the proposed federal Employee Free Choice Act, Roll Call evokes those glorious days of Cripple Creek gold fortunes that built Colorado’s historic Broadmoor hotel. Specifically, Broadmoor manager Steve Bartolin opposes the current prospect of required card check elections as “un-American.”

The news has arrived that the venerable Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs has achieved its 33rd straight five-diamond rating from AAA, one of just three highest-rated hotels in Colorado. In its just-released ratings, AAA doesn’t tie The Broadmoor to the legacy of George W. Bush, but many a Coloradan will forever link the resort to the place where Bush claims he got his last drunk on while wildly celebrating his 40th birthday.
