Bye bye cowboy diplomacy
I would go listen to former Colorado Senator Gary Hart give a lecture on just about anything, even sea slugs, but I don't think my editors would let me write about it. Luckily, today the Obama campaign hosted a "round table" with Hart and Congressman Ed Perlmutter on national security, a more palatable topic for a political column. Hart has become something of a well respected elder statesman and Perlmutter has quickly established himself as one of our delegations go-to guys on the issue, so you can imagine that as a former Military Legislative Assistant I really enjoyed this forum.

Bad news for McCain in Colorado Springs, Times blogger finds
A New York Times blogger discovers the news is not good for John McCain in Colorado Springs, where a lifelong Republican on the city council says she is abandoning her party's nominee to vote for Barack Obama this year. Further endangering McCain's prospects in Colorado's largest Republican stronghold, the pastor who replaced former GOP heavyweight Ted Haggard leading one of the city's largest mega-churches is staying on the sidelines, urging his flock to vote "for any political party."
Ambulance chasing for Jesus
Egged on by the conservative Alliance Defense Fund legal firm, 33 church leaders across the country have vowed to break federal law during their sermons this Sunday, Sept. 28. The so-called “Pulpit Freedom Day” action is a call for pastors to flaunt federal law and deliver full-on endorsements of political candidates.
But some religious leaders — including Richard Cizik of the 30-million-member National Association of Evangelicals, and Catholic Archbishop John Favalora of Miami — have warned pastors not to risk losing the benefits that come from tax-exempt status.
Evangelical leader smacks McCain for lack of ‘principle’
Richard Cizik is one of the country’s most powerful and outspoken Christian evangelical leaders. He happens to be a Republican, and he has known the GOP's presidential nominee for many years. “I thought John McCain was a principled person,” Cizik says. “But John McCain has backed off, not just on climate change but on torture and a sensible tax policy — in other words, he’s not the John McCain of 2000 ... He seems to be waffling on issue after issue.
“It’s not illogical for someone to conclude that John McCain is going to be more like George Bush than John McCain is going to be like John McCain in 2000.”
McCain, Palin stump in Colorado Springs
COLORADO SPRINGS – He came to this stronghold of Christian evangelism, this time accompanied by a running mate who has energized the socially conservative base of the GOP. And what a difference it made.
Two days after he accepted his party’s nomination for president, Republican John McCain and his new vice presidential selection Sarah Palin were in Colorado Springs wooing a crowd of as many as 15,000. It was clear that, at least to many in this crowd, the Palin pick was a big hit.
Abortion foes arrested protesting Dobson’s support of McCain
The Gazette reports Colorado Springs police arrested eight protesters from a radical anti-abortion group who refused to leave the lobby at Focus on the Family headquarters Thursday morning. Members of a splinter group were protesting Focus chief James Dobson's endorsement of Republican John McCain.
We did this to Joe Lieberman
Four years ago in Boston I staffed Joe Lieberman backstage at the Democratic National Convention. Unfortunately, last night some Republican did. I believed then and still believe today that Lieberman is a good man, and I respect him for doing what he felt was right regardless of the political consequences. He’s dead wrong about John McCain and Barack Obama, but I put the blame squarely on the shoulders of left-wing Democrats for Lieberman’s decision to speak at this year’s Republican convention.

Dobson responds to Palin teen pregnancy
James Dobson, president of Colorado Springs' Focus on the Family ministry empire, weighed in on the news that McCain's Vice Presidential pick, Sarah Palin, has a pregnant teenage daughter. He called for compassion for the Palin family and 17-year-old Bristol, who plans to marry the father of her child. And, as usual, Dobson blamed the media for casting Palin and her family as "hypocrites."
Dobson freezes over, will vote for McCain
Time's Swampland reports Dr. James Dobson, founder of Focus on the Family, said Friday afternoon he has changed his mind and plans to vote for John McCain.
