Many Democrats are standing behind concerns raised by former Denver Mayor Wellington Webb last week after Webb said that Republican members of the Colorado Reapportionment Commission were playing it fast and loose with constitutional requirements when redrawing the state legislative boundaries.

Republicans voted on a party line, 5-4, Thursday to kill HB 1096, a bill which would have allowed 16 and 17-year-olds to pre-register to vote and have their voter status activated when they reach the age of 18.

Sen. Rollie Heath, D-Boulder, at a public meeting Friday said that by restoring tax rates to minimally higher levels, the state’s higher education crisis could be somewhat alleviated. Pointing to the tragic events last week in Arizona, Heath also argued that we must invest more in Colorado’s beleaguered public mental health services to help prevent similar tragedies from occurring here.
