Former Congressman Bob Schaffer, the son of public school educators, has run for state or federal office almost continuously since 1989. Congressman Mark Udall, the son of a congressman, spent his 20s climbing the world’s highest peaks and working for Colorado Outward Bound before entering politics in 1996.

The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC), citing Democrat Mark Udall's "commanding position to win this race," plans to pull its spending in the Colorado Senate contest and focus on more competitive races that could secure a filibuster-proof majority, The Denver Post reported Wednesday afternoon.

On Monday, the first day of early voting, Colorado Gov. Bill Ritter sent an e-mail out — OK it was “signed” Gov. Bill Ritter — announcing he had just voted at one of the state's numerous early vote centers. He wants everyone to do the same. Ritter specified that he voted “Yes” on Amendment 58 — the measure that would raise more than $300 million a year from oil and gas companies that, for the most part, hate the idea. But oddly, Ritter, a Democrat, didn’t say how else he voted — including his pick for prez or the U.S. Senate.

Confirming rumors that have been floating for days, The Atlantic's Marc Ambinder reports Friday morning the National Republican Senatorial Committee is pulling its resources from Colorado and will no longer support Bob Schaffer's Senate bid with its massive advertising campaign against Democrat Mark Udall.

Hot on the heels of an ad tying Republican Senate candidate Bob Schaffer to convicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff and sweatshop operators, a campaign finance watchdog group hit the Denver airwaves Monday morning with a second ad blasting Schaffer as a "war profiteer"over an Iraqi oil deal he negotiated.

With Republican power elite connections and a conservative voting record that served him well while in the GOP-dominated 4th Congressional District, Republican Bob Schaffer has never had to heavily campaign among a number of different voting blocks in an election. But one growing block that Schaffer has not courted while battling Democratic Rep. Mark Udall for the U.S. Senate seat could end up making all the difference: the Latino vote.

With energy prices plummeting right along with the rest of the stock market the past two weeks, Republicans may have lost one of their best weapons for attacking Democrats in the energy battleground state of Colorado.
