Frank Rich: the internet as a ‘workaround’

Prominent New York Times columnist Frank Rich this Sunday wrote about Americans' fickle interest in international news. As political and social events unfold everywhere but here, we don't recognize the players and we know almost nothing beyond what we can see happening before our eyes. The protesters are on the bridge! The protesters are still on the bridge! Rich laments the near-blackout of cable news station Al Jazeera English due to U.S. Islamophobia. He's right about all that and right to be mad as hell about it, too. Then he starts talking about the internet.

Radio host Boyles: Birther Lakin no punk; O’Reilly a liar

Denver talk-radio host Peter Boyles interviewed Lietenant Colonel Terrence Lakin's spokesperson Margaret Hemenway Tuesday, the second day in a row as the "birther" showdown unfolds in Washington. Boyles has admitted he is fascinated by the story of Greeley native Lakin, a decorated 18-year Army medic who refuses to deploy for the second time to Afghanistan because he doesn't fully believe Pres. Obama is a natural born citizen of the United States. Lakin is the latest and highest ranking of a handful of soldiers who have subscribed to the mostly right-wing theory that Obama has hidden or falsified the usual documents that would prove his citizenship and that he has spent hundreds of thousands of dollars "lawyering up" to protect their secrecy. Boyles, at the very least a semi-believer in the conspiracy himself, clearly admires the man the media is now calling "Colonel Birther."

Coulter says Kansas abortion doctor was ‘terminated in the 203rd trimester’

Ann Coulter doesn't "really like to think of it as a murder," discussing the killing of Kansas abortion provider George Tiller with Bill O'Reilly on Fox News' The O'Reilly Factor Monday. "I like to think of it as terminating someone in the 203rd trimester," the conservative personality says.

Dwindling education budget funds to pay for GOP’s Churchill trial

The unending Colorado budget crisis continues. There's not enough money, say lawmakers, to grant undocumented Colorado students in-state tuition. The Legislature this week is floating a $300 million cut to higher education. Yet there's lots of money to waste on political court battles that the state has no hope of winning.

GOP post-election advice to clean house, get ideas, resonates in Colorado

The post-election Republican gnashing of the teeth continues. In one interesting piece this week, the National Journal’s Charlie Cook got two “unnamed GOP strategists” to provide feedback on the national election losses. One of the more interesting tidbits was a mantra that sounds familiar here in Colorado. Democratic leaders — oh heck, let’s name them: Speaker Andrew Romanoff and Gov. Bill Ritter — have been critical of the same thing some time. Namely: “Republicans are a whole lot better at being against things than at being for things.”
