BREAKING: Amendment 46 shot down

Amendment 46, the Colorado Civil Rights Initiative, has failed. The Rocky Mountain News just posted the outcome of the race on its election results page; the contest was in limbo for the past day and a half.

Affirmative-action ban uncertain in Colorado, challenged in Nebraska

The Colorado Civil Rights Initiative is still treading water, with the result too close to call. County clerks in Boulder and Adams Counties are still counting ballots which could tip Amendment 46 one way or another. Though anti-affirmative action initiative is trailing very slightly in the polls, opponents are reluctant to call a victory just yet.

Mesa County goes back to its ruby-red roots

While most of the rest of Colorado was riding a blue wave of Democratic dominance Tuesday, Mesa County returned to its ruby-red roots, backing a 100-percent GOP slate of candidates in a Western Slope conservative stronghold where Republicans outnumber Democrats 2-to-1.

PEW credits youth as major factor in Obama win

Our CIM colleague and youth vote expert Mike Connery offers a fascinating look at the youth vote at his blog Future Majority. The verdict from PEW, which is working off of the exit polling data:
Without a doubt, the overwhelming backing of younger voters was a critical factor in Obama's victory, according to an analysis of National Election Pool exit polls that were provided by National Public Radio. Obama drew two-thirds (66%) of the vote among those younger than age 30. This age group was Kerry's strongest four years ago, but he drew a much narrower 54% majority.

Amendment 54, the “clean government” initiative targeting union supporters and their family members, looks likely to pass, sparking was could be another costly legal battle.

Musgrave doesn’t call to congratulate Markey

Other Republicans around the country and in Colorado did it. John McCain made a gracious speech to supporters Tuesday night in Arizona, where he congratulated his Democratic presidential opponent, Barack Obama, for a good campaign that has made political history. Colorado Republican Senate candidate Bob Schaffer called his opponent, Democratic Rep. Mark Udall, to congratulate him for his victory before making a thank-you speech to his supporters.
