The Indycator: If you’re wondering how Polis and Stapleton ended up on top, Littwin’s got some answers

Welcome to our new series, The Indycator, a once-a-week conversation between The Indy’s crack political reporters and Maeve Conran, KGNU independent community radio‘s director of news and public affairs.

The Indycator airs every Thursday at 3 p.m. on KGNU (online and on FM 88.5) and is available in podcast form on iTunes. In the opening discussion, Conran talks with political columnist Mike Littwin, whose weekly ranking of the governor’s race became a must-read during the primaries. Those primaries, both Democrat and Republican, featured packed fields and millions spent, and, when all was said and done, Democrat Jared Polis and Republican Walker Stapleton easily dominated the competition, becoming the nominees.

As Littwin, who has been covering Colorado politics for decades, puts it: Republicans got the establishment candidate they wanted; Democrats got the rich liberal self-funder who couldn’t be stopped.

Want the backstory, the twists and turns, the foreshadowing of things to come as we barrel toward November’s election?  Take a listen. And coming this week, reporter Alex Burness on Jared Polis.

The Colorado Independent is a statewide online news source operating in a time when spin is plentiful, but factual, fair and unflinching news in the public interest is all too rare. Our award-winning team of veteran investigative and explanatory reporters and news columnists aims to amplify the voices of Coloradans whose stories are unheard, shine light on the relationships between people, power and policy, and hold public officials to account. We strive to report the news with context, social conscience, and soul, and to give Coloradans the insight they need to promote conversation, understanding and progress in this square, swing state we call home.
