The old-school “Executive Shine” stand at the Capitol in Denver is fitted into a corner off the busy main lobby in the basement, tucked behind a short row of vending machines. You never really notice it until the day controversial conservative Colorado Springs Rep. Gordon “Dr. Chaps” Klingenschmitt is sitting happily atop it getting his shoes worked over with a shammy by a woman wearing blue rubber gloves.
These are not classic hard-leather wingtips she is breathing over. These are not showy laceless ankle boots. These are the simple black shoes of an evangelical internet preacher.
