Pueblo Democratic Rep. Sal Pace, former House minority leader and Congressional candidate in District 3, has extended a special pleading invitation to demonstrative Christian Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow, asking him to lead the Tebow-infatuated state House in prayer some day this session.
“By leading the Denver Broncos into the playoffs and giving us our first playoff victory in six years, you have given all of Colorado something to cheer about in times that have been filled with all too often negative news,” Pace wrote to Tebow. “I cannot think of anyone better than you to lead the Colorado State House in the Morning Prayer and inspire our day’s work.”
Democratic caucus Deputy Communications Director Megan Dubray told the Colorado Independent that any member of the House can invite someone to lead the prayer that opens each day’s session. She said Pace was driven to make a Tebow prayer happen.
“[Pace] conferred with the House staff. He got in contact with Tebow’s people. He did it all himself,” she said.
Dubray coudn’t remember off the top of her head who had led any of the House prayers in this just ended first half-week of the 2012 session.
“Hmm,” she said laughing. “Who was it again? Did we have a prayer on opening day? We must have had a prayer. You see, Tebow will be memorable! Oh, yeah, it was Representative Ken Summers, from Lakewood. He’s a minister. He gave the prayer on opening day.
“The full list is in the House Journal,” she said.
So far, other House prayer leaders have included Reverend Michele Quinn-Miscall, a guest of Minority Leader Mark Ferrandino, and Reverend Leon Kelly, executive director of Denver’s Open Door Youth Gang Alternatives.
Senate prayer leaders have included Rabbi Steven Foster of the Congregation Temple Emanuel in Denver, Terry Knight of the Ute Mountain Utes and Pastor Bob Kaylor of the Tri-Lakes United Methodist Church in Monument.
“I asked Tim Tebow to lead us in daily prayer because he serves as a great example of Coloradans, and he serves as this example to our kids,” Pace said in a release. “He is successful because of his hard work, determination and faith– and what other qualifications are better to lead the State House of Representatives in a daily prayer?”
The General Assembly has been abuzz with Tebow talk, a bipartisan sweet spot in these opening days, as the NFL playoff season progresses and the Broncos continue to win and the sound of legislative clashing remains a mere backroom rumbling.
