Jim Carpenter, chief of staff to Governor Bill Ritter for the last four years, announced Monday that he will soon leave the governor’s office to accept a position as a principal at Stratton-Carpenter Associates, formerly Stratton and Associates.
Founded in 1980, Stratton-Carpenter is a public affairs consulting firm known for its success managing political campaigns for Democratic candidates.
Stratton or his firm have worked on seven presidential campaigns, including that of Bill Clinton.
Carpenter has worked on campaigns for Roy Romer, Ken Salazar, Tim Wirth and others. He’s also served on the staffs of numerous elected officials.
Carpenter told The Colorado Independent that he is excited about joining Stratton and that it will be an honor to have his name on the door.
“Putting his name on the door is a big deal,” Stratton told The Independent. “He will be a full partner. Jim and I have worked together on lots of campaigns and projects. We’ve known each other for 25 years or more.
“We’re good friends and have 100 percent trust in each other. We both have a love for politics, public affairs and government,” Stratton said.
“He was going to be moving on anyway, so this was a natural evolution. With Jim, we will have more reach reach, greater depth and real strong leadership,” Stratton said.
Carpenter said the renamed firm will work with clients in Colorado as well as around the nation.
“If a campaign hires us, they can use us in a number of ways. They can come to us as a one-stop shop, where we can bring in a campaign manager, a communications manager, a pollster, whatever they need,” Carpenter said.
“Jim has been a linchpin in moving our agenda forward,” Ritter said in a press release. “His efforts have been essential to our many successes and my administration and the people of Colorado have benefited from his ability to manage complex issues under tough circumstances calmly and without fanfare.”
