DENVER– The media has crashed the downtown Marriott, which is headquarters for a clutch of top Democratic candidates tonight. U.S. Sen. Michael Bennet is the star attraction. Minutes after polls closed, cable news reported he was ahead in one of the closest, most intensely watched races in the country, and his suite erupted in cheers.
He was up 67 percent to 31 percent and it was surely the largest lead either Bennet or his opponent, Weld County DA Ken Buck, will enjoy all night.
Earlier in the night, Bennet stepped into the ballroom here and fielded questions from TV news reporters.
“People have said that, based on your ads, the impression is that people hate your opponent Ken Buck. What do you say to that?”
“Well, we’ve run overwhelmingly positive ads. Independent spending groups like the one run by Karl Rove have been running the attack ads for the Buck campaign,” Bennet said.
Colorado Democratic Party Chairwoman Pat Waak just spoke to the crowd. She thanked all the canvassers in the crowd.
“Let’s have fun and hope the returns stay where they are right now.”
9News just flashed the latest numbers.
Bennet 53 percent; Buck 42 percent with 7 percent reporting.
Democrat John Hickenlooper leads the three-way gubernatorial contest.
Hickenlooper 57 percent; American Constitution Party candidate Tom Tancredo 33 percent; Republican Dan Maes 7 percent.
