Rove groups run anti-Bennet ad in Denver, Colorado Springs

Correction: This article has been amended to reflect that Karl Rove and Ed Gillespie formed, and continue to have ties to, American Crossroads GPS. They do not run the organization as originally stated.

American Crossroads GPS, a 501 (c)(4) organization formed by former George W. Bush senior advisor Karl Rove and former Republican National Committee Chairman Ed Gillespie, is airing a new ad for a week in Colorado against Democratic Sen. Michael Bennet.

The ad buy costs $425,000 to run in Denver and Colorado Springs, the Washington Post reports. The ad itself, without attribution, accuses Sen. Bennet of spending “on average $2.5 billion every day” and criticizes his vote for the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act.

American Crossroads — which also includes a 527 group and a 501 (c)(3) group — is the creation of Rove and Gillespie. They aim to raise up to $60 million for the midterm elections. National Journal, which first reported about the group, described it as a place for disgruntled large Republican donors to donate money outside of the Republican National Committee, which has had money problems and a series of mini-scandals and distractions under the watch of chairman Michael Steele. (Steele has made off-message comments, such as saying Afghanistan is unwinnable and that Republicans can’t take back the House.) Alternatively, the group has been described as a Republican version of Democratic-affiliated groups like Moveon.org.

Sen. Bennet defeated former Colorado House speaker Andrew Romanoff last week in the Democratic primary, but now faces Weld County District Attorney Ken Buck in the general election.
