Colorado Republican Party Chairman Dick Wadhams issued the following statement Thursday amid reports the party is looking to replace former U.S. Rep. Scott McInnis on the GOP gubernatorial primary ballot against Dan Maes on Aug. 10.
McInnis is embroiled in a plagiarism scandal after the Denver Post Monday exposed sections of his water articles produced for the Hasan Family Foundation were originally produced by current Colorado Supreme Court Justice Gregory Hobbs.
McInnis did not credit Hobbs and blamed a researcher. Maes topped McInnis in delegate votes at the Republican Assembly, and the winner of next month’s primary will take on Democrat John Hickenlooper. McInnis says he’s staying in the race.
Here’s Wadhams’ statement:
“I am proud of the open and fair nomination process that began this past March when more than 25,000 Colorado Republicans participated in precinct caucuses leading up to our recent state assembly. The caucus-assembly and petition processes have determined what candidates will appear on the primary election ballot and that is how it should be.
“Hundreds of thousands of Colorado Republicans will vote in the primary election to determine our nominees for every office from county commissioner to U.S. Senator and Governor and that is how it should be.”
