Gallup reported today the results of a poll that show dramatic overlap between conservative Republicans and tea party adherents. Based on the findings, Gallup writes that the tea party is not a new movement but merely a rebranded version of the Republican base.
The poll found 62 percent of tea party members identified themselves as conservative Republicans. The next largest segment, 17 percent, identified as moderate Republicans. Three percent identified as liberal Democrats.
Results are based on combined telephone interviews from USA Today /Gallup polls conducted in Mar, May and June, with a random sample of 3,095 adults, aged 18 and older. The poll has a sampling error of plus or minus two points.
