Colorado 7th District Democratic Congressman Ed Perlmutter — running for his third term in a difficult political environment for incumbents — praised President Obama’s decision to send 1,200 National Guard troops to the U.S.-Mexico border in a press release Tuesday:
Now, more than ever, well-trained Guardsmen and women are needed here at home to ensure our nation is as fully prepared as possible to deal with border security, natural disasters and potential terrorist attacks,” said Perlmutter. “Each state should have a fully-trained, fully-equipped, and fully-ready National Guard to adequately respond to any disaster or homeland security threat.” commented Perlmutter.
In 2007, Perlmutter introduced a bill that would have required all Army and Air Force guard units serving in Iraq, along with essential equipment, to be redeployed for border control (among other uses) within 90 days of the bill’s enactment.
Perlmutter will likely either face Aurora City Councilor Ryan Frazier or former McCain staffer Lang Sias in the general election. At the Republican state assembly, Frazier got 48 percent of the delegate vote, while Sias received 43 percent. The primary will take place on August 10.
