Obama signs health reform bill into law

As expected, President Barack Obama Tuesday morning signed into law the Senate’s package of health care reforms, a number of which will go into effect this year.

“Today, after almost a century of trying, today, after over a year of debate, today, after all the votes have been tallied, health care insurance reform becomes law in the United States of America,” Obama said to a standing ovation from the large group of Democratic lawmakers gathered at the White House for the signing. “In a few moments when I sign this bill all of the overheated rhetoric over reform will finally confront the reality of reform.”

The Senate will now begin debating a separate reform package that tweaks the original Senate bill. Leaders from both parties expect that measure to clear the Senate by the end of the week.

(Here’s what happens, though, if it doesn’t.)
