Carrie Prejean, the decrowned Miss California USA and darling of the Christian right, appears to have been scrubbed from the National Organization for Marriage website. The move comes in the wake of a TMZ interview with the man whom Prejean reportedly met through MySpace and had a four-day hotel fling with in 2007. He alleges Prejean sent a series of sex tapes to him over the next couple of years. It’s the latest chapter in the story of Prejean’s partygirl past, which keeps leaking into the public sphere, ruining what had been her budding career as a Christian-values conservative politics spokesperson.
“She’s just using religion to get to where she’s at right now,” Prejean’s former lover told TMZ. “Really, I mean if she was just herself and she’d just take the route of ‘Hey I just like to party and I like to have a great time and I’m hot,’ hey, that sells too. She’s just trying to sell to a different crowd right now, and I’m not buying it, and a lot of people that know her, I mean, they don’t buy it either.”
Prejean became a darling of the values-voter bloc when she told gay blogger Perez Hilton during this year’s Miss USA pageant that marriage should be restricted to straight couples.
Then topless photos of her appeared, their existence never reported by Prejean in violation of pageant rules. Pageant boss Donald Trump defended her but Prejean proved increasingly difficult for pageant officials to work with and Trump eventually dumped her. The National Organization for Marriage championed Prejean throughout the ordeal, saying Prejean had become the target of Hollywood for articulating her Christian values in defiance of the gay agenda.
Hollywood hates Carrie…
[But] God knows, and we know, the truth about Carrie: She’s a young woman of great beauty who chose truth over the glittering tiara that Hollywood offers,” said Brian Brown, Executive Director for NOM. “Of course they will try to punish her, but we know she will be fine in the end, because her values are in the right place.”
“Hollywood will dance its tribal war dance over her body–the hatred generated against her has been extraordinary–but Carrie will be free to define her own mission and message from now on. Congratulations,” stated Maggie Gallagher, President for NOM.
Then came the sex tape, in which Prejean reportedly appears alone, masturbating. Now comes news of a series of similar tapes. And so NOM has apparently decided it’s time to cut bait and put distance between itself and Prejean.
Gay rights group Californians Against Hate sent out a press release today reporting that Prejean no longer appeared on the NOM website and provocatively asked for an explanation of the thinking behind the move.
Why did you take her off your web site?
Did you hear from a lot of your high powered Board of Directors on this? What about your likely creator and largest backer, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon Church)? They gotta be uncomfortable with the whole multiple sex tapes thing.
You sure changed your tune…
NOM Public Relations representative Mary Beth Hutchins told the Colorado Independent that Prejean was never an official spokesperson for the organization. Hutchins said a member of NOM would call with further details.
