A recent press release from Denver Police Department Director of Data Analysis Chris Wyckoff advises city residents to take their goodies out of their cars.
Denver has seen its crime rate jump 8.1 percent so far this year and motor vehicle-related theft amounts to 18.4 percent of total crime, an increase of more than 32 percent when compared to last year’s figures.
What items get snagged from cars? You can guess. The release lists ipods, GPS units, money, tools, stereo face plates, purses, laptops, cell phones, credit cards and CDs as some of the main draws. Most of the theft occurs between 9 p.m. and midnight.
Still, not everyone is losing their hard-to-replace musical lists. Although the report notes that 66.4 percent of the neighborhoods in Denver experience an increase in crime, some neighborhoods saw decreases. Indian Creek, West Highland, and Highland experienced a more than 20 percent decrease in crime this year.
