Of course Focus on the Family is tickled over the fact that Republican Saxby Chambliss whupped Democrat Jim Martin but good in the Georgia Senate race this week. After all, the Colorado Springs-based conservative Christian ministry gave, in the midst of recession and layoffs, some $35,310 worth of radio advertisement to boost Chambliss. But even in victory, Focus soberly reminds supporters of all of those mutinous “GOP crossovers.”
In a story in its political advocacy Web site CitizenLink this week, Focus cheers on the fact that there’s no way the Democrats could have a filibuster-proof 60-40 majority — even if Democrat Al Franken wins the still-undetermined Senate showdown with Norm Coleman in Minnesota.
But the ministry and conservative Christian media empire is warning supporters of what they surely believe are dangerous times ahead.
In their case, that means moderate Republicans siding with Democrats on numerous pieces of legislation, like embryonic stem-cell research and gay- and lesbian-friendly legislation.
Among the identified Republicans on Focus’ radar:
• Sen. Lisa Murkowski, Alaska
• Sen. Richard Lugar, Ind.
• Sen. Olympia Snowe, Maine
• Sen. Susan Collins, Maine
• Sen. Judd Gregg, N.H.
• Sen. George Voinovich, Ohio
• Sen. Gordon Smith, Ore.
• Sen. Arlen Specter, Penn.
