For Colorado lawmakers, the economy will be the priority when the Legislature convenes in January. And, judging from some of the commentsabout said topic, Monday was a day for commitments — along with clichés and some creative metaphors.
On Monday a committee of lawmakers and members of the Legislative Council met for the first time to talk about creating jobs and boosting Colorado’s economy. Ultimately, as the Denver Post reports, what happens nationally will dictate what happens in Colorado, which lost 13,000 jobs between September and October. That said, here are a few musings uttered during the meeting:
“We cannot rest for a moment.”
— Senate President Peter Groff, D-Denver
“I think this is an opportunity for us to make lemonade out of lemons.”
— State Sen.-elect Rollie Heath, D-Boulder.
“This is not a flash in the pan. This is a real commitment. We want real outcomes.”
— State Sen. Gail Schwartz, D-Snowmass Village
“It’s the private sector that creates jobs, and it’s hard-working Coloradans who serve in those jobs.” — State Rep. David Balmer, R-Centennial
“Colorado can’t operate in a vacuum.”
— Todd Herreid, the Legislative Council’s chief economist
“It’s like a tractor beam pulling us into the spaceship.”
— Todd Herreid
