The big elephant in Colorado today is Mitt Romney, who has trumpeted through the Centennial State collecting the most money and high-profile support in his field. But – at least compared to the other three Republicans left standing – John McCain has scarfed down some impressive peanuts of his own. Keep reading for a who’s who of supporters.Back in November, Patrick Davis, the former political director of the National Republican Senatorial Committee (who personally supports Mike Huckabee), provided as good a rationale as anyone about why so many big-name Colorado Republicans are supporting Romney.
“Their relationship,” said Davis, “goes back to [former Colorado Congressman] Bob Beauprez’s race for governor, when Romney was the chairman of the Republican Governor’s Association and had occasion to be with Owens’ operation and be with Bob Beauprez. Clearly he impressed them early on.”
Romney has raised more money than any Republican candidate in Colorado – $848,840, ranking third in the money race behind Democrats Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton.
