Rep. Al White (R-57) has announced his candidacy for State Senate District 8 which includes Routt, Jackson, Moffat, Rio Blanco, Garfield and Eagle Counties in the northwest section of the state. Current Senator Jack Taylor will be term-limited in 2008.
More about SD8 below….Republicans have held the seat for many election cycles, however in 2000 and 2004, Democratic challengers lost by less than a 10% of the vote. White admitted that it could be a tough race.
Unaffiliated voters at 31,000 number more than Republicans at 29,000 registered voters and Democrats at 19,000. In the last election, incumbent Republican Jack Taylor edged Democratic challenger, rancher Jay Fetcher 28,521 to 26,896 votes. The 2002 and 2006 SD8 races were targeted by both parties.
On the Democratic side, Steamboat City Councilman Ken Brenner and Eagle County Commissioner Arn Menconi are possibly looking at the position.
