Democratic candidate Betsy Markey announced this morning that she raised $61,000 including $36,000 in contributions and a personal loan of $25,000 for her fledgling campaign against Congresswoman Marilyn Musgrave. Breakdowns on the in- and out-state contributors were not made available. According to Markey’s press release:
“With $55,000 in the bank after just 30 days, and an experienced fundraiser and a highly successful and well reputed consulting firm, we’re off to an excellent start,” said Markey.
“I believe my message of inclusion and integrity has already struck a chord with voters and am extremely pleased with our support to date. I’m deeply invested in this race, and am so grateful to all those who have shown their support by making personal donations to my campaign. Together, we will put this district back on the right track.”
In other campaign news, Markey announced the hiring of finance director Christopher Mills and Envision Communications, a powerhouse media and communications firm based in Washington, DC.
Mills previously worked for Emily’s List and a host of DCCC-endorsed candidates, including Rep. Betty Sutton (D-OH) and Patty Murray (D-WA) and netroots-favored candidate Jim Stork, who dropped out of a 2004 congressonal race in Florida’s 22nd district. Stork, an openly gay man and mayor of Wilton Manors, Fla., raised $1 million from 9,000 contributors until he folded his campaign in September 2004 after being diagnosed with a life-threatening heart condition. Mills was Stork’s campaign finance director.
