The Boulder Daily Camera is reporting that entrepreneur Jared Polis will formally begin his campaign for the U.S. Congress from the 2nd Congressional District today. The Camera said:
Boulder entrepreneur and philanthropist Jared Polis will formally begin his candidacy for U.S. Congress today (Monday, May 21), bringing to the 2nd Congressional District race a candidate with virtually limitless financial firepower and solid name recognition.
If elected, he would become Colorado’s first openly gay representative to the U.S. House of Representatives.
Polis, a Democrat who served six years as a member of the Colorado State Board of Education, said he would file his campaign papers this morning.
The other two announced candidates for the CD-2 seat being vacated by Democratic Rep. Mark Udall are State Senate President Joan Fitz-Gerald, and environmental activist Will Shafroth. Fitz-Gerald is currently considered the frontrunner.
In an interview with the Camera, Polis emphasized his business experience. He has founded and sold several internet-based companies, earning him a considerable fortune. But he was also a primary sponsor controversial Amendment 41, which intended to limit gifts to public officials. The ambiguous wording of the amendment has led to unintended consequences.
