Colorado Citizens for Ethics in Government (CCEG) is pushing for a state audit of the Secretary of State’s office after news broke that an employee was operating a private Web site selling Colorado voter information. According to a Rocky Mountain News story Friday, Secretary of State Mike Coffman said the employee, Dan Kopelman, did not have access to the database of voter records.
From the CCEG:
Although Secretary Coffman also told reporters that he had no knowledge of Kopelman’s consulting business, public records indicate that Coffman has known about Kopelman’s political business activities for years. Secretary Coffman’s candidate committee for secretary of state made two payments to Political Live Wires in 2005, and made numerous expenditures to Kopelman personally. Coffman’s previous campaign committees for other offices also show numerous transactions with Kopelman dating back to 1996.
The CCEG has sent a letter to the state auditor and has filed a CORA request for information relating to Kopelman’s employment and the controversy.
