Just as reports are coming in about another food contamination case, U.S. Sen. Ken Salazar has launched an effort to keep a Denver FDA lab open.
Salazar has introduced an amendment to an existing FDA bill that would require a comprehensive evaluation of the safety impacts of closing any lab, including the one in Denver, before any action could be taken.
Denver’s FDA lab played a key role when spinach was found to be contaminated with e. coli last fall. News broke today of pre-packaged turkey being contaminated with listeria.
“The FDA’s decision to arbitrarily close its Denver lab simply does not make sense,” Salazar said in a press release. “An objective process grounded in public facts is necessary for the public, and for Congress, to feel secure in this decision.”
