A bill that would allow injured workers greater flexibility in choosing a doctor advanced at the State Capitol yesterday. As Alan Gathright of the Rocky Mountain News reports after the jump:
The third time was the charm for Rep. Morgan Carroll, D-Aurora, who won initial passage Thursday of a measure that would allow workers injured on the job to choose a physician from a list provided by employers.
“I think it is a moral imperative that we give human beings some choice over what happens to their own bodies,” said Carroll, who has failed with similar bills the past two years.
Currently, Carroll said, insurance companies have complete control over the selection of the doctor for a patient who has been injured at work.
She stressed that state law allows people to choose who treats their ailing pets, repairs their cars or fixes their homes. Under House Bill 1176, employers initially would provide injured workers a list containing at least two physicians. Patients would be allowed a one-time change in the first 90 days to another physician from the list.

Tom Tancredo’s bid for the U.S. Presidency is moving along fairly well. The Colorado congressman announced yesterday that his exploratory committee had raised more than $1 million, which could mean that he won’t run for re-election in Colorado:
What Tancredo’s modest fundraising does mean is that he can probably raise enough money to run a full-fledged Presidential campaign, which means that he’ll have the resources to make the kind of noise he wants to make. It could be enough to get him on the radar for a potential cabinet post should a Republican win the Presidency in 2008.
More importantly for Colorado, Tancredo’s fundraising success means that he is less likely than ever to run for re-election to his congressional seat. Several Republicans, including state Sens. Tom Wiens and Ted Harvey, and Wil Armstrong, son of GOP patriarch Bill Armstrong, have already been putting together shell campaigns for taking a run at CD-6 in the event that Tancredo doesn’t run for re-election; expect them, and others, to speed up the process in the next couple of weeks.
