A bill that would help prevent cervical cancer was approved by the Senate Health and Human Services Committee today by a vote of 5-4. The bill would require Colorado school-age girls to be vaccinated against HPV, a sexually transmitted disease that can lead to cervical cancer.
The bill’s sponsor, Sen. Suzanne Williams (D-Aurora), compared vaccine to those already required for Hepatitis B and tetanus. And, she said, it will save lives.
Opponents to the bill are wary of the government advocating a vaccine that protects against a sexually transmitted disease to younger teens and children, but parents who object have the option to refuse.
SB 80 will now go the Appropriations Committee.
