The traditionally conservative Rocky Mountain Newsendorsed Referendum I today, a measure that would give gay and lesbian couples legal rights under domestic partnerships.
In the paper’s editorial announcing the choice, the paper acknowledged that gay and lesbian partners do face legal obstacles, and that Referendum I would “level the playing field.”
The Rocky also came out in support of Amendment 43, which is a constitutional amendment that defines marriage as between one man and one woman.
From the editorial:
Moreover, Ref I does not confer on gay couples the very important federal benefits associated with marriage; nor does it mean that a Colorado domestic partnership must be recognized by other states. In those senses, Ref I truly doesn’t create the equivalent of a parallel marriage.
Ref I is the proper response to the legitimate aspirations of gay and lesbian Coloradans. Amendment 43 is a reasonable attempt by other Coloradans to preserve their right to define marriage as this state’s citizens see fit.
