The “oil and gas” debate between gubernatorial candidates Democratic Bill Ritter and Republican Bob Beauprez isn’t until October 4th, but that didn’t stop both candidates from expounding on their views about drilling at the Colorado Water Congress’s summer convention in Breckenridge. Beauprez said energy company leaders assured him that the industry would develop technology to allow drilling in and around watersheds without endangering water quality. Earlier Beauprez had backed the sale of oil and gas leases in wilderness areas and community watersheds.
Ritter said drilling and exploration in municipal watersheds, as well as the impacts on the people of the Western Slope, are more important than the promises of new technology.
