Tennessee-based private prison firm Correction Corporation of America was among a small group of companies to purchase an award winning steer at the 2005 National Western Stock show.
Normally cows might not seem critical to the day-to-day operation of a private prison. However, this was not your normal cow. The Reserve Champion Light Weight Crossbred Steer at the ’05 Junior Auction was raised by then 12 year old Nick Beauprez, whose uncle is Bob Beauprez, Republican candidate for Governor.A search of the National Western Stock Show Event Results Archives reveals that this 2005 Purchase (pdf) was both the first and only for Corrections Corporation of America.
The steer was purchased for $8,000.
Here in Colorado, Corrections Corporation of America operates the Bent County Correctional Facility, the Kit Carson Correctional Center, the Crowley County Correctional Facility and the Huerfano County Correctional Facility, and has recently been award a contract to add more than 1,400 prison beds throughout their Colorado facilities.
