People in Denver who lack health insurance pay nearly 52 percent more than the federal government pays for the same prescription drugs according to a new report out today from CoPIRG, a nonprofit, nonpartisan consumer advocacy organization.
They also pay about twice as much for drugs they buy at local pharmacies than they would if they lived in places like Montreal or Halifax-that is, Canada. The average cost of 10 of the most commonly prescribed prescription drugs was $77.15, which was under the national average cost of $81.31, but is still pricey.
Done in conjunction with a the national PIRG office, the survey covers costs in 35 cities across the nation. Overall, it found that nationally, uninsured Americans pay 60 percent more on average than the federal government pays for the drugs covered by the survey.
