A new Rocky Mountain News/CBS4 News poll spells bad news for supporters of Amendment 48, a controversial constitutional amendment that seeks to grant rights to fertilized eggs.
The measure is failing 68-27 pointing to a landslide public rejection of Coloradans for Equal Rights’ aim to create a test case to challenge abortion rights granted under the landmark Supreme Court decision, Roe v Wade.
Opponent’s concerns that the ballot’s deceptive language appears to no longer be the obstacle once feared:
Shall there be an amendment to the Colorado constitution defining the term “person” to include any human being from the moment of fertilization as “person” is used in those provisions of the Colorado constitution relating to inalienable rights, equality of justice, and due process of law?
After a much ballyhooed delivery of 103,377 valid petition signatures far in excess of the 76,000-odd needed to place the measure before voters last spring and a much publicized fight with U.S. Senate candidate Bob Schaffer, a fellow abortion foe who refused to sign on to the campaign, the group has lost considerable steam.
A well-funded opposition campaign, “No on 48,” blitzed the state in recent weeks with television and radio ads, mailers and scores of medical, clergy and lawyer surrogates denouncing the far-reaching implications of the measure.
