Ugly independent political spending in Colorado tripled in the last election cycle

By | 08.24.11 | 11:43 am

It will come as no surprise to Coloradans force-fed a fire-hose stream of ugly and untrustworthy campaign election material over the last two years that independent spending– spending directly tied to no candidate and mostly free of accountability– more than tripled in the state from 2008 to 2010. This according to a recent report released by watchdog group Follow the Money, which singles out Colorado for study. The authors report that, although the state has relatively strong disclosure laws, larger changes in campaign finance rules have let loose here as everywhere in the country a storm of money and a sea of roiling paperwork that can cover over as much as it reveals.

Poll: Perry already leading among Colorado Republican voters

By | 08.15.11 | 4:52 pm

Texas Governor Rick Perry announced he was running for president on Saturday but Colorado Republicans have been eagerly looking forward to the news, according to Public Policy Polling. Perry tied long-running candidate Mitt Romney for the top spot among Colorado GOP voters surveyed by PPP the first week of August. Perry polled way out in front of controversial Minnesota Congresswoman Michele Bachmann, who won a much-watched Iowa straw poll last week, rivaling Romney’s status as front runner.

Hochul edging toward win in New York special election

By | 05.24.11 | 8:29 pm

Democrat Kathy Hochul is reportedly streaming ahead of Republican Jane Corwin in the Buffalo-area special election that has been marked out as a first test of the controversial GOP congressional budget plan crafted by Paul Ryan that seeks to “save” Medicare by turning it into a voucher system. Hochul hammered on the Ryan Medicare plan and Corwin defended it mostly by backing away from it.

Bennet wins

By | 11.03.10 | 9:28 am

With thousands of votes still to be tallied, Michael Bennet has won the first political campaign of his life — and it was a political battle for the history books. He beat back a serious Democratic Party primary challenge and emerged victorious in the general election this morning over conservative Weld County DA Ken Buck in the post-Citizens United, anti-incumbent, anti-Democratic year of the Tea Party. Barring a dramatic recount turnaround, Bennet is headed back for a full term to the U.S. Senate, a lawmaking body he frustratedly described earlier this year as a sort of purgatory where nothing happens despite the grave problems facing the nation.

Lefty nest Aspen increasingly infiltrated by GOP operatives

By | 10.21.10 | 1:59 pm

ASPEN — Aspen isn’t just a haven for liberals. Conservatives network, plot and stuff their war chests here too. A few recent A-list functions, at least two of them deeply shrouded in secrecy, underscore Aspen’s importance to the Grand Old Party and the conservative ideologues who pull its purse strings.

In campaign hinged on deficit spending, Buck supports all Bush tax cuts

By | 09.17.10 | 1:10 pm

In swing-state Colorado, as elsewhere across the nation, the size of the budget deficit and government spending have dominated 2010 election campaign rhetoric. The race in Colorado for U.S. Senate between Democratic Senator Michael Bennet and Weld County Republican D.A. Ken Buck has been so far shaped by Buck accusations that Bennet is a big-time tax and spender.
