Juan Alberto Ovalle, who listed “radio producer” for “Focus on the Family” on his post-arrest custody report, interviewed Focus officials last month about an upcoming conference highlighting the ministry’s outreach to Spanish speakers across the globe — but soon after The Colorado Independent was able to play the audio files and posted links to the Family Media Center on Monday morning, the files were removed.

“We’re shocked,” a Focus on the Family spokesman told The Denver Post Monday. Gary Schneeberger said the ministry “is beginning its own process of looking into the allegations” and plans to help law enforcement officials with their investigation.

Ovalle, who founded the Spanish Christian Audio business in 2001 to “help Christian organizations with their audio needs,” also narrated a Spanish-language audio version of the Bible, available on 64 compact discs. Turns out the “teenager” was really an investigator with the district attorney’s office, as Juan Alberto Ovalle discovered the next afternoon when he was arrested on two felony counts in Lakewood after arranging to meet the girl for sex, according to the affidavit.

Ovalle, who narrated a popular audio version of the Bible in Spanish and worked as a radio producer for the Colorado Springs-based Focus on the Family, is being held in the Jefferson County Jail on a $25,000 bond. He faces felony charges of attempted sexual assault on a child and Internet luring, the district attorney’s office said.

After asking whether the girl had had sex before, Ovalle, using the screen name “tgc-rn,” asked again, “You really like older?” and, “Would you like to meet me?” according to the affidavit.

The next morning, the investigator, still acting as the portrayed child, “immediately received an instant message from Ovalle,” who said he was home alone and “horny,” the affidavit states. After asking whether her mom was at home, Ovalle asked for her address and phone number and said he would soon be on his way, according to the affidavit. Ovalle told the girl to describe what she liked to do when she had sex and then wrote, “I like all my face to get wet.”

Minutes later, Ovalle called the number provided by the investigator and spoke with an official who continued portraying the teenage girl, the affidavit says. He told her he was on his way and wanted to have sex with her, describing various sexual acts in graphic language, according to court documents.

About two hours later, after another phone call in which he detailed the sexual acts he wanted to perform with the teenager, Ovalle’s green BMW approached the address investigators had provided and slowed down, the affidavit says. When an investigator turned on lights and sirens behind the BMW, Ovalle kept driving, turned a corner and kept going until finally pulling over, investigators said. District attorney investigators identified Ovalle and then arrested him on the felony charges, according to the arrest report.

Ovalle will be formally charged Thursday in Jefferson County District Court, a district attorney spokesperson said.

A Colorado Springs man who narrates the Bible in Spanish on CDs and works in the Spanish broadcasting department of Focus on the Family appeared in court Monday in Golden on two felony counts of using the Internet to lure a 15-year-old girl for sex, The Denver Post reports.

 Juan Alberto Ovalle, 42, was arrested Friday when he drove to Lakewood to meet the girl — who turned out to be an undercover officer — after discussing various sexual acts he wanted to perform with her, the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office said.

Ovalle, a native of the Dominican Republic, is listed as the “Voice Narrator/Artist” of the Spanish Reina Valera Biblia, available on 64 CDs, and can be heard here discussing an upcoming Focus on the Family conference with directors of the evangelical empire’s outreach to the Spanish-speaking community.

After first encountering the officer who was posing as a 15-year-old girl on the Internet last week, Orvalle made “sexually graphic statements in a chat room to a person he believed to be an underage teen,” the district attorney’s office said in a release. When the undercover officer said her mom wouldn’t be home the next day, Orvalle said he was “horny” and made arrangements to come to her house, according to an arrest affidavit.

Jefferson County District Attorney Scott Storey touts the arrests, since 2005, of more than 235 adults for attempting to meet children and teens for sex. The arrests are part of an ongoing sting operation funded in part by private grants to a nonprofit to fund the Child Sex Offender Internet Investigations Unit. In addition to investigations, the program pays for Cheezo, a 5-foot-tall “fuzzy yellow lion mascot,” who travels to schools to warn children about the dangers of Internet luring.

Ovalle appeared in court Monday on two felony charges — criminal attempted sexual assault on a child and Internet luring of a child –and is set to be formally charged Thursday morning, said Pam Russell, spokesperson for the district attorney’s office. His bond was set at $25,000 and he remained in custody Monday afternoon, she said.
