Former Democratic National Committee chairman Howard Dean is currently conducting a health-care town hall meeting here at Netroots Nation in Pittsburgh, where he predicted that health-reform legislation will pass through reconciliation in the Senate, without a single Republican vote. And he just took a minute to address the other kind of health care town halls, the ones that have dominated the news cycle this past week.

Responding to a throwaway question from Progressive Strategies co-founder Mike Lux (”I’m Bobby Birther … are you going to serve on these death panels?”), Dean said he’d “actually respond to the question seriously” and told the audience of progressive bloggers and activists, “The truth is, those meetings aren’t about health care.”

He continued: “Look carefully at the people who are shouting their congresspeople down. They don’t look anything like the generation that elected Barack Obama.”

But Dean said those meetings are a sign that the right-wingers recognize the strong prospects for health-care reform. “They’re desperate,” he said. “They’re just making things up.”

The risk of long-delayed health insurance reform collapsing under its own weight could come from an unlikely faction — the political Left.

That sinking reality was in full voice Wednesday at a Denver town hall forum featuring Howard Dean, the former Democratic National Committee chairman, ex-Vermont governor and a physician.

In his characteristically blunt political bedside manner, Dean rallied the crowd, “It’s not up to the right wing of the Republican Party, it’s not up to the health insurance companies, it’s not even up to Barack Obama … it’s up to you” to ensure Congress delivers patient-centric health insurance reform.

Whooping, hollering and a few crowd-pleasing political digs aside, Dean’s push for a universal “public option” that would allow people to buy into a government-run health care program, popularly known as Medicare for All, was met with cool skepticism by the left-leaning audience of 300 that clearly favored a single-payer plan and the abolition of private insurers.

But the political wisdom, such that it is in Washington, D.C., is that a single-payer plan is off the table according to U.S. Sen. Max Baucus, D-Mont., the chairman of the powerful Senate Finance Committee and a leader in health care reform on Capitol Hill. The single-payer showdown came to a head when Baucus had a disruptive group of five doctors and nurses ejected from a May 12 Senate hearing after they protested being excluded from the discussion.

Single-payer proponents were further left in the lurch when President Obama backed off campaign promises for a sole public health care financing program for the more moderate public option approach.

Dean dismissed concerns about the challenge of getting the steadfast single-payer faction to join a coalition with public option backers to fight the more entrenched insurance industry interests as congressional hearings advance toward the president’s August deadline for a health care reform package.

“The truth is there is no pure single-payer on the face of the Earth,” Dean told the Colorado Independent in an interview before the town hall. “Every system has a private insurance out.

“My attitude toward this is let’s get something. Let’s get the ball rolling. Let’s not have an argument between two poles. Let’s pick a middle course. Of course, the right wing and the insurance companies are already attacking the middle course. If there’s no public option we shouldn’t do anything. The last thing you want to do is pour a trillion dollars into something we already know doesn’t work right.”

Dean’s hard-won political skills from the Iowa caucuses to the smoke-filled rooms of the nation’s capitol may come in handy to head off another potential reform game-ender.

Domestic policy blogger Ezra Klein writes today at the Washington Post that liberal labor unions and policy groups may knee-cap reform efforts over a tax proposal backed by the Democrats. The Senate is expected to cap the employer tax exclusion — the estimated $300 billion annual tax break for firms that provide health care insurance to workers. Savings from the tax credit cap would be used to pay for the public option.

Capping the employer health care exclusion is good policy. Eliminating it entirely would be better policy. It’s true that some unions, like AFSCME, would see the value of their employer benefits degrade slightly. (Some unions, like Service Employees International Union, would scarcely be affected at all. Janitors are not, as a rule, given generous employer health benefits.) But the labor movement, as a whole, is much worse off in a world where the employer exclusion is capped but we have health reform than in a world where we don’t have health care reform and can’t control premium costs.

In that world, employers who offer health benefits will be ever less competitive against their stingier competitors. Union shops will close as the associated labor costs become unsustainable. Employers will fight ever harder against unionization because they’ll be terrified of being trapped into health coverage arrangements that they can’t control.

Concerns that industry lobbyists, unenlightened business groups and conservative ideologues will undermine, if not outright kill, health care reform may be supplanted by the Left’s own circular firing squad.

The gay community is playing a big part in convention activities. Dean appointed seven LGBT members to sit on the convention’s standing committee that oversees the platform, credentials and rules sub-committees.

In 2006, the DNC adopted new rules that will increase the number of LGBT delegates at the 2008 Democratic Convention.

They came for the logistics, and they also highlighted food, free speech – and golf carts. An estimated 400 journalists arrived at Denver’s Pepsi Center on Tuesday for a test run through the site of next year’s Democratic National Convention and to hear their leader Howard Dean talk about the veritable Yellow Brick Road to the White House. The morning-long prelim started with fruit, pastries and some coffee.

Then a phalanx of Democratic officials with titles like “director of technology” and “deputy coordinator of operations” took the podium to talk about how they’re going to pull off satisfying something like 15,000 journalists and bloggers and talking heads and producers and editors during the convention next Aug. 25-28. They vowed that “systems will be in place to meet your editorial needs,” and “we want to understand what is most important to you about the spaces that you occupy in this building” and “we have a great hotel package and we’re really proud of it.”

They guaranteed their commitment to traditional print and broadcast media and to bloggers and online news organizations and to free speech and freedom of the press and the American Way. They are still working with the Secret Service and with the City of Denver on security, namely involving protesters from the right and from the left. Specifically, the group Recreate68 was mentioned.

By far the best promise of the morning: “There will be golf carts allowed in the perimeter.”

The perimeter being the Pepsi Center’s surrounding parking lots, which will be transformed into tents filled with the media, broadcasting the events of the Democratic convention to the world. On Tuesday, one on-air head expressed a good deal of concern about the possibility that one of Denver’s summer afternoon rainshowers might ruin his hairdo: Can we possibly arrange a covered walkway between the stadium and his media tent?

We’ll check into that, came the reply.

Another reporter asked what to expect at the convention, gastronomically speaking. Apparently, he found the choices at the last Democratic shindig, shall we say, limited. As in, Dunkin’ Donuts. Not like the Republicans, he pointed out, who – sniggers here - provided a far superior spread.

Leah Daughtry chief executive officer for the convention, took that question. She smiled. “Look, we like to eat; we like to have a good time. So don’t worry about that.”

Next question…

Later, Daughtry’s promise was delivered. Fresh green salad, tasty pasta salad, fruit trays, not-soggy sub sandwiches — and veggie-and-chicken wraps whose merits one prominent editor of a Denver alternative newspaper convincingly sold as “the bomb” (the editor was right). Napkin-lined baskets of kettle-fried potato chips – served with silver tongs. Cookies and brownies.

And then Democratic National Committee Chairman Dean gave a 10-minute speech highlighting what he called “clear differences” between Republicans and Democrats – on everything from health care to morals. (He didn’t say anything about Idaho Sen. Larry Craig.) He praised Denver, a city he termed is the center of the New West – and which has not seen a Democratic convention for 100 years.

Now, five of the eight states in the Rocky Mountain interior are led by Democrats – a marked difference from the red swath that carved its way through the Rockies just a few short years ago. In 2008, Dean said, the road through the West leads to the White House.

“We believe we can reach out to all Americans, and we believe that starts in the West,” he said.

The City of Denver offered the national media guided tours of the Mile High City to places like the Denver Art Museum, Coors Field and the LoDo District. Monday there was a pre-walk-through reception at the Wynkoop Brewing Company downtown.

According to DNCC officials, the walk-through served as an opportunity for news organizations to become acquainted with the Pepsi Center site and plans for the 2008 Convention.

The media got an overview of the housing application and hotel room reservation process, the credential application and distribution process, the Convention transportation system, site access and security procedures, media workspace in and outside the Pepsi Center and information regarding DNCC-selected vendors, including telecommunication and exposition services.

Colorado Confidential will offer continued coverage of the Democratic National Convention set for Denver from August 25-28, 2008.

Dean was moving over increasingly warmer waters, where atmospheric conditions could create a favorable environment for intensification. It was cruising west at about 23 mph. Forecasters said it is too early to tell where Dean will land….

Whoops! That’s the weather report for Tropical Storm Dean. Please read on to find out where Democratic National Committee Chair Howard Dean will land in Colorado. Hush, Hush has some other statewide political tidbits for you, too.The Democratic Convention is a year away and it is already time to party–again! Just released by the DNC:

<img width="150" vspace="15" align="left" hspace="8"src="http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k309/Dotzero/logo_citydenver_home.gif" border="0" alt="Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket">

Howard Dean and the Democratic National Convention Committee (DNCC) will celebrate the one-year out mark for the 2008 Convention with a “Convention Countdown Kick-Off” for the local community at 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, August 22 on the Pepsi Center grounds. Special guests will include Colorado Governor Bill Ritter, Jr. and Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper. Refreshments and entertainment will be provided.

There was a party to announce Denver as the convention site. There have been many festivities to attract and thank large donors. There was a celebration when the DNCC office opened. The Colorado Democratic Party had an event with Dean during his last visit. Are we going through party boot camp for the real bash in 2008?

Sen. Hillary Clinton’s campaign is revving up in the state. Her field workers were calling Colorado Democratic Party members this week trying to stir up interest for volunteering and donations.

Talking to a Clinton campaign spokesperson, Hush, Hush was told that they were still putting together a state steering committee, but all other plans right now were, ah, hush, hush.

Sen. John McCain was just in Aspen. He had a great comedy routine for the first 15 minutes of his presentation. It made one wonder if he was auditioning for Jay Leno.

Sample: “It’s so dry in Arizona that the trees chase the dogs.”

Then things got more serious. McCain didn’t make the mistake that candidate John Edwards made last week. McCain talked about global climate change right after Iraq. Edwards didn’t mention it until questioned by the audience.

McCain said one of the reasons why the Republicans lost in 2006 was because of over-spending.

“Republicans had promised to change government. Instead, government changed the Republicans,” he said.

If you would like to hear the whole discussion, it will be available on KJAX.

Speaking of presidential candidate John Edwards, he made several political faux pas in Aspen last week. Number one, as noted above, was when he failed to emphasize the environment in one of the most “green” towns in the US.

Number two, Edwards said the Bush tax cuts for those making over $200,000 a year should be rescinded. That line may play well in Peoria or Dubuque, but in Aspen? You need to be a millionaire just to pay for on-street parking.

Surely, Hush, Hush isn’t the only political junkie to go “over hill, over dale” to an event. Congressman John Salazar’s gathering in Meeker took it to the extreme, however. The event host lived 25 miles south of town on a quaint county road that turned into a dirt road that turned into a four-wheel drive path. (Refer to photo) Hush, Hush wasn’t sure if she was going to see Salazar or a bear first.

If you are going to run a recall on an elected official, you might want to read the petition rules first. The attempt to recall Montrose Commissioner Bill Patterson failed miserably because the recall organizers hired outside help to acquire signatures. To have circulated petitions legally, one had to be a registered voter in Montrose. After three reviews, the Montrose County Clerk determined 5,583 signatures were turned in, but only 2,270 were valid. The magic number to put the issue on the ballot had to be 3,950.

Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean announced the six members of the senior leadership team for the 2008 Democratic National Convention Committee (DNCC) in Denver last Thursday. The group will be organizing the convention itself and work with the Denver Host Committee on other convention activities. Dean said the staff will be moving to Denver in the near future.Colorado Democratic Party Vice-chair and Denver Host Committee member Dan Slater explained the difference between the two groups:

Right now, there are two separate organizations which are charged with running the Convention planning effort. The first is the Denver 2008 Host Committee, which most of you have heard about. Denver 2008 is locally-run and is the group that formed the convention bid and is now working to raise the money and volunteers to support that bid.

The Democratic National Convention Committee (DNCC), which is the arm of the DNC, is in charge with running the Convention for the DNC. The DNCC is the group that gets the FEC grant to run the Convention, and in the end, the DNCC will be spending most of the money raised by the Denver 2008 Host Committee.

In the end, the DNCC is primarily concerned with making sure that what goes on at the Convention is a good portrayal of Democrats in general and our nominee in specific. The Host Committee, on the other hand, is primarily concerned with making sure that Denver looks good.

Colorado Confidential’s “CCNet-TV” captured Dean’s announcement of the DNCC staff:

From a DNC press release, backgrounds of the DNCC head staff:

The DNCC leadership team is headed by Leah Daughtry who will serve as CEO of the 2008 Convention. Daughtry is currently the Chief of Staff at the DNC, managing day-to-day strategy and operations. She is a former U.S. Department of Labor assistant secretary during the Clinton Administration.

Peggy Cusack has been appointed as the DNCC Chief of staff. She is currently managing director of the Washington office of Rendezvous Consulting Group, a firm that specializes in the production and management of large scale, high profile events. She served in senior management roles on three presidential campaigns, two presidential inaugurations, planning committees for the Olympic Games, and two Democratic National Conventions.

Susana Carbajal is currently an attorney with the Bankruptcy and Specialty Litigation Department at the law firm of Brown McCarroll, L.L.P. Carbajal also served as associate deputy director of the Office of Presidential Personnel where she recruited and recommended candidates to President Clinton for appointments to cabinet departments, agencies, commissions and boards. She will serve as General Counsel for the DNCC.

Jenni R. Engebretsen is currently the Director of Communications for the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). She has been appointed to serve as Deputy CEO for Public Affairs. Before joining the RIAA, Engebretsen spent eight years working in Democratic politics, most recently as the Communications Director for the Kerry-Edwards for President campaign and for the Democratic National Convention in Boston.

The DNCC Deputy CEO for Intergovernmental Relations will be Sky Gallegos. She has worked with state and local elected officials spans the last 13 years and includes senior positions in government, corporate, non-profit and campaign arenas. In 2003, Gallegos was the National Political Director for the Edwards for President Campaign.

Cameron Moody, with more than 18 years of experience in project management, strategic planning, special event logistics, and transportation systems, was appointed as the Deputy CEO. Moody was Deputy CEO for Operations for the 2004 Democratic National Convention Committee.

Jim McMullen served as a career civil servant for 26 years at the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) and will be the DNCC CEO for Administration and Finance. Prior to his retirement in 2004, he was Deputy Assistant Secretary for Budget and Strategic Planning where he was responsible for the DOL budget which totaled $60 billion and 17,000 staff.
