For the last few years, New Mexico has been close to becoming the first state between the coasts to legalize civil unions for same-sex couples. Many Democrats in both houses of the state legislature support the idea, and as a presidential candidate last year, Gov. Bill Richardson pandered to gay audiences saying he would gladly sign such a measure.
New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson withdrew his name as the nominee for commerce secretary because of a federal grand jury investigation into allegations a company tied political donations to state contracts, NBC’s Andrew Mitchell reported Sunday afternoon. “Let me say unequivocally that I and my Administration have acted properly in all matters and that this investigation will bear out that fact,” Richardson said in a statement first reported by Mitchell. “But I have concluded that the ongoing investigation also would have forced an untenable delay in the confirmation process.”
Supporters of Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama have announced that new Spanish-language advertisements will be airing in Colorado and other battleground states.
Some of Colorado’s biggest movers and shakers were included on the presidential bundling lists of Sens. John McCain and Barack Obama, The Colorado Independent reported Thursday. The top two presidential candidates accounted for only 20 of Colorado’s 64 bundlers, though.
