Latino leaders riled by role of immigration in health-reform debate

Latino lawmakers long ago gave up on the idea that illegal immigrants would receive any sort of subsidized insurance under a health-reform bill. They didn’t imagine the debate would get so ugly that lawmakers would propose denying undocumented immigrants the right even to purchase private health insurance in this country, a proposal that flies in the face of free-market economic and personal responsibility political philosophies.

WASHINGTON– Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele’s speech Monday at the National Press Club was short on details. He said Republicans wanted to address “runaway costs” by perhaps posting the cost of treatments “openly on the Internet,” supporting “bold new incentives” for medical breakthroughs, and ending “life-time health care benefits and insurance for Congressmen who leave their jobs.”

Ernest Luning continues the discussion this morning on our exclusive reporting on improprieties by the Colorado Independent Ethics Commission that continues to repeatedly hold secretive, closed-door meetings.

The state’s top ethics panel Friday denied the Colorado Independent’s request for recordings of 14 illegally convened meetings just this year that appear to violate state Open Meetings Law. Ironically, the commission was established in 2006 when voters passed Amendment 41 to demand greater transparency and accountability in government.
