Koch Industries buys up anti-Koch internet addresses

By | 08.24.11 | 3:24 pm

In the eyes of the American public, Wichita-based Koch Industries is coming to stand more for right-wing string-pulling than for its blockbuster oil and gas business. For years, David and Charles Koch spent millions mostly behind the scenes to advance anti-environmental and anti-labor policies and to attack Democratic candidates for office. In the last two years, however, their expenditures have routinely made news. In the wake of the high-profile standoff in Wisconsin– where Gov Scott Walker was caught explaining to a prank caller impersonating David Koch his plans to break public employee unions– Koch Industries has dedicated time and money to mitigate fallout from the politics of the men in charge. The company’s website includes an op-ed and a video defending Koch politics. Today comes news that the company has been buying up anti-Koch web addresses as part of its new brand-management strategy.

Something stinks in the climate change debate

By | 08.15.11 | 8:24 am

No wonder global warming has Al Gore so hot under the collar. His harangue against climate change deniers induced a frenzy of conservative chest-pounding last week wherein Fox News and the usual suspects swore his scatological sermon must be a symptom of dementia. They went on to spew the same misleading memes the ex-vice president decried in Aspen.

Jose Antonio Vargas loses his driver’s license, increasing risk of his deportation

By | 07.26.11 | 8:09 am

When journalist Jose Antonio Vargas confessed to being undocumented in a piece for New York Times Magazine, he stated that he had obtained an Oregon driver’s license by using a fake Social Security card and proof of residency. However, his lawyer advised him not to include the fact that he had obtained a Washington state driver’s license after the Oregon one expired. That news broke soon after the story was published. Now, Vargas’ license has been cancelled by the Washington State Licensing Department, which cited Vargas’ lack of residence in the state as their reason for revoking his license.

By | 07.15.11 | 8:54 am

Supporters of diverse local media and champions of competition among news outlets are celebrating the recent U.S. Court of Appeals verdict in Prometheus Radio Project v. the FCC. The court rejected Federal Communications Commission rules that would have opened up ownership to further corporate consolidation. In the wake of the egregious overstepping by media mogul Rupert Murdoch’s uber British tabloid News of the World, the ruling has taken on an heroic cast. The court said that in making its rules the FCC had ignored the input of millions of American citizens.

Colorado clergy join in calling for a federal budget fair to the poor

By | 07.14.11 | 9:48 am

Prominent Christian pastors in the United States who have dedicated themselves to serving the poor and most vulnerable citizens don’t believe in trickle-down economics and they don’t believe the problem of poverty should be left for churches to address. More than 4,000 of those pastors signed an open letter to that effect addressed to President Obama and the members of Congress, urging them as they hammer out a federal budget not to make poor and hungry Americans bear the burden of reducing the nation’s deficit. More than 95 pastors and clergy members in Colorado signed the letter, which appeared in Politico Wednesday.
