Is Colorado patriotic enough for Palin?
With Sarah Palin’s stop in Colorado today, I have to wonder — does she consider our state pro-America? Are we “real America,” or part of that other America? I only ask because at a fundraiser in North Carolina last week Palin talked about how wonderful it felt to be in a “pocket” of “what I call the real America, being here with all of you hard working very patriotic, um, very, um, pro-America areas of this great nation.”

CNN, Obama camp misled on Palin robocall statement
I received a press release last night from Barack Obama’s Colorado Press Secretary Matt Chandler at 10:08 p.m. The timing didn’t surprise me because working late on a Sunday is standard operating procedure as Election Day nears — but the headline caught my eye: “CNN: Sarah Palin speaks out against John McCain’s robo calls.” Whoa! Heavy stuff, and it certainly got me to read the rest of the release. Unfortunately, the quote from Palin doesn’t at all fit the headline, and the Obama campaign should know better.

Eng cable ad dings Coffman
Newcomer Hank Eng is waging a long-shot, shoestring campaign against Secretary of State Mike Coffman, who emerged the winner in a four-way GOP primary for retiring Rep. Tom Tancredo’s staunchly Republican 6th Congressional District seat. Facing those long odds, Eng will launch a cable ad Saturday morning with what looks like a $20,000 buy — roughly 10 percent what Coffman is spending over the same period, not counting the Republican’s commercials on broadcast TV. The spot light-heartedly attempts to paint Coffman’s troubled tenure as Secretary of State as a reason to consider the little-known Democrat.

Joe Biden’s patriotic teeth: A gleaming beacon of hope
Some candidates make clean teeth part of their campaign platform. Others just have great teeth. Joe Biden’s pearly whites have inspired their own website, “Joe Biden’s Teeth 2008,” dedicated to, well, something about the VP nominee’s highly patriotic teeth.

Obama wins youth vote
The votes are in, and Obama has won America’s youth vote in a landslide! No, I don’t mean 18-24-year-olds, I’m talking grade school here. Scholastic, that purveyor of books, news, and study aids for children, has tallied the results from just shy of a quarter of a million kids, and Obama beat McCain 57-39. So why does that matter? Because since 1940 the results of the student vote in Scholastic’s Election Poll have mirrored the outcome of the general election in all but two cases.

McCain will put “country first” at debate
The Obama campaign today sent out a “memo” to reporters on “John McCain’s plan to ‘whip’ ‘That One’s’ ‘you-know-what.’” They quote three separate pundits saying McCain needs a game-changer tonight, and imply he’ll go after Obama’s connection to “terrorist” Bill Ayers. I don’t think so. I think McCain’s read the same polling as everyone else, and he’s chosen to go out with as much dignity intact as he can manage at this point. I expect a solid performance from McCain, but I don’t expect a nasty, negative “game-changer.”

Obama even hipper with iPhone app
The other day I thought, “I just don’t have enough Obama in my life.” Then I found out about the Obama application for the iPhone and realized I could, in fact, plug that giant “O” into one more place it hasn’t yet taken over. The app, though, doesn’t just put a logo on my screen. It’s a slick grassroots program that uses every bit of the phone’s capabilities to turn out more voters for Obama.

Election obsession: When one poll isn’t enough…
Last week, my crystal ball predicted an Obama victory, but if you’d like to follow the polls and make up your own mind, this revolution of the intertubes makes it ridiculously easy. From the possibility of a presidential landslide to a filibuster-proof Senate majority and on down to Congressional pickups, election nerds can track this year’s race like never before.

I would go listen to former Colorado Senator Gary Hart give a lecture on just about anything, even sea slugs, but I don’t think my editors would let me write about it. Luckily, today the Obama campaign hosted a “round table” with Hart and Congressman Ed Perlmutter on national security, a more palatable topic for a political column. Hart has become something of a well respected elder statesman and Perlmutter has quickly established himself as one of our delegations go-to guys on the issue, so you can imagine that as a former Military Legislative Assistant I really enjoyed this forum.

My crystal ball: Obama ’08
Larry King Live carried this headline last night, “Obama pulling ahead.” From the Politico, “Dem strategists see landslide in the making.” Rothenberg, “For Republicans, Another Blood Bath Looms on Horizon.” Nearly every poll tracking site, including FiveThirtyEight.com, Election ’08, and 270toWin all predict a greater than 90% likelihood Obama will win the electoral college vote in November. I don’t mean to jinx anything, but when I gaze into my crystal 8-ball and ask who will become our next President: “All signs point to Obama.”
