Denver mayoral candidate Chris Romer today voiced his support for Colorado’s civil union bill, Senate Bill 172, and his backing of full marriage equity. SB-172, sponsored by Sen. Pat Steadman and Rep. Ferrandino, passed out of a Senate committee Monday.
“All Coloradans should be treated equally under the law, which is why I proudly support this proposal,” Romer said in a prepared statement. “It’s time to not only give all committed couples the same legal rights, it’s time for full marriage equity.”
Romer has a long history of supporting LGBTQ inclusive legislation and promoting public policies that protect the civil rights of Denver’s LGBTQ citizens. He was awarded the 2009 LGBT Denver Public Official of the Year Award, an honor from the Gay and Lesbian Fund for Colorado.
Romer continued, “I’m proud to have been a tireless advocate for the LGBTQ community throughout my life. My important work in the State Senate on discrimination protections, extending health benefits to partners of state employees and second parent adoption demonstrates my commitment to advancing equal rights in Colorado and my strong support for the LGBTQ community. As mayor I will work to ensure Denver treats all its citizens and employees equally, regardless of sexual orientation.”
