A few Republicans are seeing blue over state Sen. Doug Lamborn’s primary win in the bid to replace Congressman Joel Hefley, and this week formally threw their support behind the Democrat, Jay Fawcett.
On Tuesday, Fawcett unveiled a new website, RepublicansforFawcett.com, identifying a dozen GOP members who have endorsed the Democrat in a Republican stronghold, and another dozen who have agreed to serve on his finance team. The reasons for the defection have been multi-tiered. As Colorado Confidential reported last week, some high profile Republicans in El Paso County were turned off by the nastiness of the 6-way primary, and were particularly offended with an attack mailer that accused two other conservatives in the race as supportive of the “radical homosexual lobby.” Others, including longtime Colorado Springs business and community leader Marv Strait, said he wants a congressman with military experience. Fawcett is an Air Force Academy graduate and retired colonel who served in Desert Storm, while Lamborn has never served in the military.
Other high-profile Republican supporters include Colorado Springs City Councilman Scott Hente, Black Chamber of Commerce President and fellow Air Force Academy graduate James Stewart, and contractor Chuck Murphy.
Former city councilwoman and longtime community activist Mary Ellen McNally has also signed on in support. McNally, who has headed and served on multiple boards and commissions -

Neeed to Run Spelchek I updated the posting to reflect the new information from Mary Ellen McNally, i.e. her frustration about the direction she believes her party is headed.
And, it should be pointed out that someone over at the Fawcett campaign needs to proofread before posting a little bit more carefully. Specifically, get the names spelled right -

Fawcett gets Red Carpet rollout I don’t think the fact that Fawcett had kind words for Hefley should hurt him. Hefley earned my respect when he refused to back off on ethics charges against DeLay despite all kinds of threats. Cost him his committee chairmanship didn’t it? I think that took a lot of courage and might have cost him the primary. Colorado Springs could have a much worse Republican than Hefley.
Fawcett was gracious and that’s fine with me. I don’t live up there though and don’t know much about any of them.,but I think he’s going to need some Republican support in that area of the state to get elected.
