Thanks for clarifying, Suzanne. Clearly the World Forum is a known quantity, especially in the wake of a Denver man's arrest a couple of years ago at the resort for criticizing Cheney on the Iraq War -- a case that's still being litigated after he sued Cheney's security detail.

More recently, the Dillon Dam Road closure in nearby Summit County due to an undisclosed threat shows the state's resort areas are on somebody's radar. Thinking we're immune to big-city-style mayhem would be unwise, especially resort towns right off of I-70. After all, Ted Bundy admitted to killing a Vail nurse nearly 30 years ago. Her body has never been found.

David - I wish to clarify the quote above. Please note that it is not merely the negative publicity that a report could produce (in fact, the existence of contingency plans might be a comfort to some), but the proprietary nature of the plan until the review is completed. It will then be communicated to the residents, I am told. While that is only fair, the length of time it took to get to this stage is the most disconcerting part of all.

One example of a security issue I've observed is when Cheney and Co. roll into to town each June. The ludicrous Secret Service ballet that occurs when Cheney comes into or out of the Village Hall garage is an example of how his safety is being attended to, but the safety of others in his proximity is not. All traffic into/out of the garage comes to a complete stop when he is on the move. When he is upstairs in the Park Hyatt, anyone can drive into and out of the garage. Construction trucks at that time of year fill the garage. I think you get my point. This has been repeated each June that I've been here since 2004.

The BCRC may look upon me as the proverbial thorn in their side (or worse), but I believe strongly that iven gthe inherent conflict that exists when a corporation runs a town - as Vail Resorts runs Beaver Creek - residents have a right and obligation to hold the corporation to the same standards of a governmental entity. I have a great deal of respect for the members of the BCRC board and the VR executives who directly are involved with Beaver Creek, but sometimes they need a little reminder that while we are a resort first, we are slowly becoming a village with more full time and near-full time residents, much to their chagrin. Working together and addressing issues in the full light of day is more productive and better for all constituents.

Suzanne Hoffman-LeBlanc
