I believe the law should permit women to have an abortion whenever they choose, for whatever reason they choose. I don't like the idea that for (apparently) moral reasons there should as few as possible. That's a stigma and an undesireable stance to take.

“The right of all human beings the freedom to control their own bodies.” What right could be more fundamental? And now it's codified by the enlightened Council of Europe. As they point out, the ban on abortions does not result in fewer abortions, but mainly leads to clandestine abortions. This is much in the same way that the ban on sex education does not lead to less sex for our youth, but simply to more 'clandestine' sex! Keep abortion safe, legal, and rare!

I've said it before and I'll say it again: the “personhood” ballot initiative has nothing to do with fertilized eggs, pregnancies, or abortions. It's about trying to control women. Every major religion devalues women and regards them as second-class citizens, and what better way to accomplish this than to dictate what they can and cannot do with their own bodies? The Europeans are, apparently, doing the smart thing and keeping their churches and governments separate, as our founders wanted us to do. Let's hope that, when the time comes, Americans will be smart enough to follow the Europeans' lead. Thanks to Janet Brazill for a well-written, illuminating article!

I was also unaware of PACE and am glad I found this article. For someone to suggest that a fertilized egg should have legal rights that could trump an adult woman's rights is appalling. I can just imagine a woman in court, “sued” by her own egg to be born. Of course, the egg would have to be represented by a guardian ad litem, since it could not think or speak for itself. Does this strike anyone as strange? Are women brood mares or are they humans who can decide their own reproduction?

Excellent article! I didn't know about PACE, but I am encouraged by their approach. Europeans once again show their ability to approach things intellectually instead from a gut level of prejudice. I only hope the Coloradans will take the mature approach with this initiative in November and vote no on it. I will talk to as many people as I can about this before the election.
