to house and senate I am pleased that the House care bill maintains the longstanding policy against federal funding of abortion. I urge you to work to uphold essential provisions against abortion funding, to include full conscience protection and to assure that health care is accessible and affordable for . Until and unless these criteria are met, I urge you to oppose the final bill.

No, they are not "a bunch of old men who have lost touch with modern American and European society." They have written off the first world, where they can, at best, have very limited influence, in favor of absolutist and quite primitive positions that suit their expansion into the Africa, and Asia, with the hope of holding their power in Latin America against the surge of what they call "cults," that is, Protestant Christian evangelism. <br><br>No one can accuse the RCC of being "out of touch;" they are a supremely successful, intelligence gathering operation. They do what Ambrose Bierce defined as "deliberation." That is: "Examining one's bread to determine which side the butter is on." The hierarchy of the RCC is cynically in touch with their own political advantage. That is why the Church is becoming so Conservative, because only the most reactionary Catholics will follow their absurd orders. Hopefully, that is a shrinking pool of true believers, who have more faith in a Pope than in their own sense of decency. This ugly denunciation of health care reform proves that. Anyone who sits in church and listens to that has lost all sense of what it means to be an American. <br><br>This is explicitly what Americans feared when they violently opposed the late 19th century immigration of the Irish, Italians, the Swiss and the Poles. They feared that these European immigrants would be bad Americans, who took political orders from anti-democratic popes, through cynical Bishops. That is the disgraceful state of the contemporary Roman Catholic Church in America. Had those 19th century Americans foreseen the undue influence that these Bishops presume to exert on American politics, they would have sunk the boats that brought my grandparents to Ellis Island.

That might be one of the things he's saying, and it is definitely another thing that you're saying, but this is also what he's saying: Catholic pastors directed to distribute anti-health reform materials at mass<br><br>that's the bold headline of this article. the headline is the strongest thing people will take. and that suggestion that Catholic Church is anti-health reform gets reinforced throughout the article. he does not just make the argument you're making. he goes way further into suggesting things that are flat out unfair.

What the writer is saying is that it's silly to be trying to kill a health care reform bill that would essentially be treating a legal medical procedure the same way the private health industry already treats it. If Catholics have a beef with abortion, they should take it up with their health care provider (not the government). It's not the government's job to legislate morality for us - we can determine our morals on our own (at least some of us can) It IS the government's job to provide access to health care for it's citizens - regardless of the procedures we do or do not use.

that point about many pro-lifers already paying for abortion through private insurance, while important for all anti-abortion people to understand (and being a point i have already been telling people myself) has absolutely nothing with my stated gripe about the article. like i said, if the writer wants to debate their position on being against public funding for abortion, then do that. but don't write a headline and article suggesting the church is anti health reform, when it's one single aspect of a particular possible draft/interpretation/etc of reform that they're against.

ummm....any Catholic with private health insurance is already funding abortion procedures through their policy premiums. Read the article - it's all spelled out. Private insurance companies pay for the procedure - why haven't the Catholic bishops put up a fuss about that?

I proofread that quote -- both in my reply and in yours -- and it should read:<br>"Our position on abortion? All I can say is that no woman who does not want one should NOT be forced by circumstances to seek one."<br>That is what was actually said;,without the second "not," it sounds really sinister!
