Your comments show a certain lack of understanding of the forces of relativity.. We also inhale/exhale oxygen, but excess can kill. Try this simple experiment... place some hot water in a vacuum flask and take the water temperature; place some ice in a sieve over the top of the flask to allow the melting ice to drip into the hot water; take the water temperature when the ice has melted. Now try to conceptualise this on a global scale...ice caps melt, sea temperatures cool, coastal temperatures cool, sea levels rise....and our ice caps are definitely melting, perhaps the colarado independant should show the evidence for this!!!!! By the way, in reply to your comment, I use my computer once every 2 weeks to cut down on the use of paper- therefore saving our trees and the emissions from the transport required to deliver the post. Your Al Gore has earned the respect of many countries in the world for his collating of the research into the damage we are doing to our planet, it gives us hope that America is not as backward in this area as we once thought...and as eminent geologists have said, the world will survive, homo sapiens won't.

It is unfortunate that the oil shale issue is being so deeply politicized. The time for oil shale development may have arrived, but most of the companies working on it see a moderate pace for development of the resource, even in the absence of the changes in the Federal program. Development of oil shale can be done without leaving permanent scars, and the water issue has been widely focused on in the press with few actual technical data presented. The Department of Interior was invited to speak at the Symposium at Mines, but politely declined. They might have learned a great deal about the water issue had they attended. The representative for Colorado's DNR very effectively presented the State's viewpoint, but left immediately after his talk. Much that followed disagreed (again politely) with what he had said. Those who say important technical questions remain have been conspicuous by their absence at the premier conference trying to answer those questions, and therefore their vaguely defined questions remain unanswered. Greater participation, with active input to the developers will be necessary if the right questions are to be answered about oil shale development.

How is oil shale development immoral, criminal, and hypocritical? Oh, you must be referring to "global warming," or "climate change" as it is being called now since global temperatures have actually been cooling for the past 8 years. The notion that carbon dioxide, the gas you exhale every 2-3 seconds, is a pollutant and is going to cause the world to end is absolutely ridiculous. In fact, most of the global circulation models used to predict warming fail to take into account any other atmospheric molecules. Since carbon dioxide represents only 4 out of every 10,000 molecules in the atmosphere, the fact that the other 9,996 molecules weren't used as inputs completely undermines the scientific basis of the argument. And it's kind of funny that the people who stand to profit the most if climate change regulations are implemented are the one's who are pushing the hardest for regulations. By the way, how much carbon dioxide do you think was emitted during the production of the computer you used to type your comment? My guess is that it was manufactured overseas and shipped here so that's probably a lot. And not to mention the large amounts of plastic, which is made from oil, that are part of your computer (everything from your keyboard to your computer casing). Talk about hypocritical....

[...] From the Colorado Independent (David O. Boak said Salazar’s decision to limit new RD&D leases and more closely monitor their progress will inhibit research. “I feel like the arguments are highly political arguments, not technical ones,” Boak said.
I have lived in NW Colorado since 1957 and oil shale prospects and development have been going longer than that. It seems to me that enough wasted energy has been spent and it's high time to get on with the show. <br>Just think, if EXXON had not pulled out in the 1980's, oil shale would have been in full swing and the US would be totally independent of foreign oil.
