Dehydrating over the course of two weeks seems pretty horrible to me. Cases are all different. Thanks for the additional info. I didn't add that the "severe brain damage" afflicting Schiavo was untreatable because I take that for granted. I don't think I think about any of this the way you think I do.

I would argue that it's not a "horrible way to go" and ask what you base this on?
Do you envision a movie where a character dies in the desert without water.
That's not what happens.
My father-in-law died of a terminal illness and at one point he stopped eating and taking in fluids and he passed away at his house with home hospice.

==
http://www.globalideasbank.org/creend/CRE-13.HTML

Of the hospice nurses surveyed, 71 per cent agreed that dehydration reduces the incidence of vomiting, 73 per cent agreed that dehydrated patients rarely complain of thirst, 51 per cent reported that there is relief from choking and drowning sensations when fluids are discontinued, and 53 per cent agreed that dehydration can be beneficial for the dying patient. Also, 85 per cent of nurses surveyed disagreed with the need for hydration by IV and/or tube feeding when dehydrated patients have a dry mouth. Finally, 82 per cent of the nurses disagreed with the statement that dehydration is painful.
==
The Conservatives are freaking out about the idea (which isn't accurate) that Obama wants to put a government bureaucrat between you and your doctor but isn't that exactly what they did in this case? They intervened and over rode the husband's decision which was carrying out the patient's wishes.

Your bias also shows in that you left out the fact that she suffered severe, irreversible brain damage that left that organ discolored and scarred, shriveled to half its normal size, and damaged in nearly all its regions, including the one responsible for vision; and that no treatment could reverse this.

As always the right is full of bovine deification. The Shaivo case had to do with the patients wishes and rights. She told her husband what she wanted.She had already made the arrangements for how she wanted to be treated. I am sorry that Mr Shindler lost his sister. She was dead long before this incident.The government has no place in end of life decisions.That is why there are no "DEATH PANELS" in the healthcare legislation. She chose. Her wishes should have been followed to the letter.

Thanks Dean.
Yes. Ms Schiavo died of dehydration, as I am learning is common in such cases and which is a pretty horrible way to go. The law should be changed. I would have liked to go into the Bush-Congress legislation and husband Michael Schiavo and Randall Terry. I was limited by space and time. Those subjects have been written about extensively. None of it is pretty. The woman in death even, it appears, is not free from the ugly politics that play for advantage on the sad circumstances of her last days.

A significant correction: Ms. Schiavo died of dehydration, not starvation. This manner of natural death is chosen hundreds of times by caring families dealing with persistent vegetative states in loved ones. It is not an ideal choice, but it is as humane an option as current laws allow.

I am surprised, though, that the article merely mentions Karl Rove but ignores the special session of Congress called by GW Bush to rush through legislation to overturn an unpopular but correct legal decision that gave decision-making authority to Ms. Schiavo's husband, Michael. Neither do I see reference to Bobby Schindler and his family's relationship with the infamous Randall Terry of Operation Rescue.
